Dangerous Doses Dangerous Doses
Catherine Eban's Dangerous Doses: How Counterfeiters Are Contaminating America's Drug Supply gives a detailed account of a counterfeit ring operating in a developed nation and making millions of dollars swindling unsuspecting patients. Her book also shows how complicated the drug supply chain network can be in a mature economy - drugs can follow a confusing network of initial purchases, exports, reimports, relabeling and overstock buy-backs before they reach a patient. From fraudulent repackaging to outright theft, the counterfeiters aggressively put profits before people before they were finally shut down by a group of enforcers known as "the Horsemen of the Apocalypse". You can read about her story here.
By Catherine Eban, Harcourt (May 2005).

Knockoff: The Deadly Trade in Counterfeit Goods Knockoff: The Deadly Trade in Counterfeit Goods
Armed with a plethora of examples from around the world, Tim provides a critical assessment of the counterfeit trade, highlighting how it is far from a victimless crime. Counterfeiters tend to use illegal workers and by patronizing counterfeits, one could be directly exploiting low wage workers in developing nations. Tim's book also suggests a new view of Intellectual Property (IP) as a means of encouraging the proliferation of ideas, instead of it serving primarily as a defensive legal mechanism. His book is a good read for parties interested in gaining a world of background information on fake products, globalization and international trade.
By Tim Phillips, Kogan Page (November 2005)
